St Cyrus |
Although agates have been reported from a number of other localities south of Aberdeen the most productive area lies further down the coast. About 5 miles north of Montrose the lava outcrops again at the small village of St Cyrus. Collectors have visited this area for many years. Many of the collecting sites at St Cyrus are rather inaccessible and include sea cliffs and gravel bars to the south of the village. The cliffs are rather unstable and this leads to material regularly being released. There have however been accidents with collectors in the past so care should be taken here. Agates are fairly abundant and show beautiful pastel shades and colours some with unusual patterns. |
